Last year we heard that people with large thighs had a lower risk of heart disease than those with thin thighs. That certainly doesn’t apply to a large, bulging abdomen. People with big “guts” have a greater chance of getting diabetes, heart disease and other health problems. It’s a good time of the year to start reducing.
To that end, it was interesting to read that hospital cafeterias in Halifax have banned deep fryers. So no more french fries. These cafeterias are serving baked potato wedges instead. They are trying to set an example of a healthy eating lifestyle.
When we look at great medical advances in the 20th Century, we have to include the advances made in childbirth. The technological advances in obstetrical care have reduced the number of women dying in childbirth from 500 per 100,000 births in 1925 to 5 per 100,000 today.
Since February is Heart and Stroke Month, it’s a good time to review the five warning signs of a stroke: 1) sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body; 2) sudden confusion with trouble speaking or understanding; 3) seeing double with one or both eyes; 4) sudden trouble walking dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; 5) sudden, severe headache with no known cause. Medical help is essential as quickly as possible.
