Sometimes, it is good to know how fast your heart is beating by “taking your pulse”. Besides the usual places like the inside wrist area and the neck next to the voice box, you can also feel your pulse on your temple next to the eye socket, behind the knee, the upper arm area on the underside of the biceps and the upper area of the inner thigh. Some pulses are easier to feel than others.
Canadians are near the top of the list of salt-users in the world. On average, we consume 3100 mg daily. We should use only half that amount. Ontarians are the lowest salt consumers in Canada (average of 2871 mg daily) while B.C. and Quebec consume the highest, more than 3300 mg daily. How’s your salt intake?
The word anemia is not a disease but a blood test result. It indicates a lower number of red blood cells than normal. Red blood cells have a life span of about 4 months and our bone marrow is always producing more. Sometimes, low iron levels hinder this process and iron supplements can help. But there are many other causes of anema. Your doctor will define the best treatment.
When you take certain medications has a profound effect on how well they work. For example, proton pump inhibitors, (PPIs) work best taken before meals. They are more effective when acid levels in the stomach rise at meal time. Omeprazole is an example of this drug class.
